World Heritage List

Could Serpent Mound in Adams County and the ancient Hopewell culture sites in Ohio join company with the Pyramids of Egypt, the Taj Mahal of India and the Great Wall of China as World Heritage Sites? With your support, these ancient Ohio landmarks could become recognized internationally as outstanding examples of the world’s cultural and natural heritage.

The United States is now preparing a new list of nominations to be submitted over the next 10 years to the World Heritage List (will load in new browser window), which currently consists of 830 sites in 138 countries and is maintained by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Community support is critical for applications to receive serious consideration in Washington by the National Park Service, which will forward about 20 to 25 nominations to UNESCO.

The Ohio Historical Society and Hopewell Culture National Historical Park (will load in new browser window) conducted a series of meetings in December to seek community support for a Hopewell culture nomination that would include the Newark Earthworks in Licking County, Fort Ancient in Warren County and Hopewell Culture National Historical Park in Ross County. In a separate application, the Ohio Historical Society and the Dayton Society of Natural History will seek to nominate Serpent Mound in Adams County and the SunWatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park (will load in new browser window) in Dayton..
