Introduction
The Ohio Historical Society (OHS) Archives/Library, the Ohio Genealogical Society (OGS), and the Franklin County Genealogical and Historical Society (FCGHS) jointly offer a series of programs designed to introduce family history researchers to the many records and resources available to them.
The workshops will offer an in-depth introduction to the basic methods, tools and sources for getting started in your family history research. These programs are recommended to those who have not previously had genealogical instruction or who are looking to refresh or jump-start their genealogical research skills. Continuing education hours can be credited to teachers.
Several courses will be held each month with some courses repeated throughout the year.
All sessions will be held at The Ohio Historical Center. Saturday sessions are held from 10 am to 12 pm, Thursday sessions from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

- $15.00 for members of OHS, FCHGS and OGS

Understanding the Probate Process GW4

When a person is deceased the probate process prescribes the disposition of his or her assets. Very often the probate file is a veritable gold mine of genealogical information This course describes the probate process both when there is a will and when no will exists. It explains the legal language involved so that one is able one to recognize various documents and understand their purpose. The value of other court cases as genealogical date sources is also discussed as well as the relevance of land records involved in probate. The course includes a description of land surveys and land record files with their location in the courthouse.

Writing a Family History GW10

This course will address the use of optional and essential content in a family history. Optional content such as the use of family stories, photos, charts, maps, and historical background will be discussed along with technical matters such as printing, book versus electronic media, covers, binding etc. The main emphasis will be on the essential content (births, marriages, deaths and proof of lineage), and the use of computer software to organize multigenerational content. Some examples of how to document sources will also be provided, along with techniques for evaluating and weighing seemingly conflicting evidence. If you are overwhelmed by the notion of compiling a Family History this class should be very helpful.

Cornerstones of Genealogy GW2

This course establishes the foundation for all further genealogical research. It provides the beginning genealogist or family historian with the scope, understanding, and sources of information used to prepare a family tree or family history. Describes the uses and sources of Vital Statistics, Census Records, Land Records, and Probate Files. Includes topics such as military records, church records, identifying female ancestors, importance of source documentation, newspapers, family portraits, obscure sources, and record preservation. Summarizes special types of records available to add body to the basic information.

Family History Sources at OHS GW1

Offers an in-depth look at the OHS holdings and their use in genealogy. Areas include Ohio public records, historical manuscript and audiovisual sources, and other unusual materials. This session is ideal for those who want to find out more about the sources in the Archives/Library.

Organization and Documentation for Genealogists GW21
