Home for the Holidays with Ohio Historical Society

The classic song says it all, "Oh, there's no place like home for the holidays." As families gather in December to celebrate the holidays, each will reminisce about treasured holiday memories. Add a memory to your family's own holiday treasures as you join Ohio Historical Society sites for a look back at the holidays - Ohio style.

December 1
Christmas is for Kid's Tea

Hayes Presidential Center, FREMONT
1-3 p.m.
A special Christmas treat for youngsters who have been very, very good, the historic Dillon House takes on the look of a holiday wonderland for an afternoon tea. Costumed waiters serve holiday goodies, while young and old enjoy the original interiors of one of Fremont's finest historic homes. Seasonal entertainment also included. December 1
Holiday Celebration on the Frontier

Campus Martius, MARIETTA
5-8 p.m.
In conjunction with Marietta's Hometown Holiday Weekend, Campus Martius Museum's Holiday Celebration on the Frontier rings in the festive season. Adults, while you shop or enjoy a relaxing dinner, bring your children, second grade and older, to the museum. Kids will make a variety of gifts for their family/friends, such as a hand-dipped beeswax candle, a cranberry and popcorn string, a pine cone angel ornament, a yarn doll or a marble bag pouch. Take a break for the pizza party and get ready for a flashlight tour of the Rufus Putnam House! Plus, visit with the German Christmas character, Belschnickel. Christmas in Zoar

Zoar Village, ZOAR
Sat. 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Sun. Noon-5 p.m.
Zoar's distinctive Old World Christmas traditions are sure to get everyone into the holiday spirit. Visitors can sing along with carolers, take private home tours, sample Christmas food, purchase hot, fresh bread straight from the Zoar Bakery brick oven and much more. For those looking for unusual and unique gifts for friends and family, be sure to visit the craft show. December 1
A Dickens of a Murder Mystery on the Farm - SOLD OUT

Piqua Historical Area, PIQUA
4-6:30 p.m. and 7-9:30 p.m.
This very special holiday event begins with a dinner in John Johnston's dining room featuring a seasonal menu from the Johnston era. From there, guests will visit each room of the Johnston home decorated for the holidays. Characters who will give you clues needed to solve a holiday mystery will greet you. The evening concludes with dessert by the fireplace in the winter kitchen where the mystery will be solved by one of the guests. Reservations required. Admission: $30/adult, $25/child, $25/adult OHS and Piqua Friends member.

December 6-8
Christmas Dinners at Spiegel Grove

Hayes Presidential Center, FREMONT
6:30-10:30 p.m.

Echoes in Time Theatre presents: "T'was the Night Before Christmas" - An evening with Clement Moore

Ohio Historical Center, COLUMBUS
Performances at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Clement Moore, 19th century author of the well known Christmas poem, T'was the Night Before Christmas will interact with the audience and talk about his life, writing and thoughts on the poem for which he is so well known. Admission: FREE with museum admission.

December 7-8, 14-15
Dickens of a Christmas

Ohio Village, COLUMBUS
6-9 p.m.
Step into the world of Charles Dickens as Ohio Village revisits the Victorian Christmas made famous in his stories. From plum pudding to that pretty little German toy, the Christmas tree, Dickens created a festive and enduring vision of Christmas. Join us in the village as the spirit of Dickens comes to life through interactions with characters from his writings, cooking demonstrations, hands-on crafts, decorations, caroling, readings by candlelight, street vendors, and many more Victorian holiday traditions. Refreshments are available for purchase. Dickens of a Dinner

Ohio Village, COLUMBUS

You are invited to experience an evening from the world of Charles Dickens. At the American House Hotel, you will meet the author, feast on a sumptuous dinner and listen to the Ohio Village Singers perform popular period carols. December 9
Holiday Open House

Fort Meigs, PERRYSBURG
Noon-5 p.m.
Join us in the Museum and Visitor Center to celebrate the holidays. War of 1812 soldiers and civilians will be on hand to provide demonstrations, answer questions about the War of 1812 and discuss holiday customs of the period. Enjoy hot cider and cookies and help decorate an ornament for the tree. While you're here, shop our museum store for holiday gifts. The museum will be open for touring. Christmas Brunch at Ohio Village

11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Holiday revelers are invited to partake in a Sunday afternoon of food and merriment at Ohio Village. Start your experience at the American House Hotel with a splendid selection of brunch menu items. While dining you will be paid a visit by the esteemed author Charles Dickens and be entertained by the Ohio Village Singers as they perform traditional carols.
