Parent participation is an essential part of the National History Day process.
National History Day asks students to step outside their comfort zone and learn new skills like researching at an
archive or interviewing a World War II veteran. These endeavors often require parental help.
Parents can do a lot to assist their students in the creation of their National History Day project, while allowing
the student to truly own the end product.
Adults may:
- Encourage project progress!
- Be a sounding board for ideas
- Help focus the student on a narrow topic
- Provide access to resources: internet access, transportation to research institutions.
- Assist with creating a timeline to avoid the last minute scramble.
- Help with construction (drilling, nailing, sawing) that the student is not old enough or physcially capable of completing.
Students must design the exhibits/props/graphics that they recieve assistance with the creation.
Remember:
A National History Day project must be the work of the student. For more detailed information on
