WHITE CASTLE HISTORY EXPLORED IN NEW EXHIBIT
Ohio Historical Center display of hamburger chain’s history to run through 2007
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The history of America’s first hamburger chain is celebrated in White Castle: The History You Crave, a new exhibit at the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus that runs through 2007. The panel exhibit, which runs from Dec. 22, 2006 through Dec. 31, 2007, includes more than 100 artifacts and images from White Castle’s 85-year history, nearly all of it as a Columbus-based company.
Items on display include plates and mugs, fountain glassware, posters, burger boxes, match books, employee recognition pins, paper caps for men and women, sacks and a White Castle “clock” that has no hands because “we’re open all day and all night.”
The exhibit was developed earlier this year when Coca-Cola invited White Castle to create an exhibit honoring the 85th anniversary of White Castle and its long partnership with Coca-Cola. The exhibit was originally on display at World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta before being installed at the Ohio Historical Center last month. The Ohio Historical Society, which holds the White Castle collections, assisted in selecting items for display in the World of Coca-Cola exhibit. White Castle was the first company to participate in the Society’s Business Heritage Program, which works with companies and organizations to document, preserve and share their history.
“In celebration of White Castle’s anniversary, the Ohio Historical Society is proud to present, in collaboration with the company, this special commemorative exhibit featuring artifacts and photographs which are part of the OHS collections and archives,” said William K. Laidlaw Jr., executive director. “Through their manuscripts, records, photographs and artifacts, each of our Business Heritage partners provides important contributions to our understanding of the complex story of Ohio’s past that we proudly chronicle. Through this partnership, the Ohio Historical Society adds to the collective body of knowledge and provides encouragement and service to businesses interested in preserving their history.”
