Power of Place Examines Ohio’s Pivotal Role in Political History
Ohio Historical Society To Host Panel Discussion Nov. 15

COLUMBUS, Ohio, October 15, 2007 – History tells us that no Republican has ever won the presidency without carrying Ohio. Current presidential voting trends indicate that no Democrat can become president without it.

The Ohio Historical Society will host Power of Place at 7 p.m., Nov. 15 to examine the interesting history of Ohio’s political importance and the factors influencing why it is said, “as Ohio goes, so goes the nation.” The event takes place at the Ohio Historical Center at I-71 and East 17th Avenue in Columbus.

Perched on the Red State/Blue State American political and cultural divide, Ohio and its 20 electoral votes will once again be up for grabs in next year’s presidential contest. Throughout its history, Ohio has proven to be a key battleground and a political bellwether for the nation.

Join a discussion with panelists featuring Herb Asher from The Ohio State University, Miami University History Professor Andrew Cayton, State Sen. Ray Miller and former Democratic National Committee Chairman David Wilhelm. Gail Hogan, producer and host of Showcase Columbus, will moderate the discussion.

This event is sponsored by the Ohio Humanities Council and the Buckeye Council for History Education.

Admission is $5 for students, $10 for OHS members and $15 for the general public Parking is free. A brief reception will follow the event. You may pay at the door. Register to attend by Nov. 12 at govrelations@ohiohistory.org or by calling 614-297-2355.

The Ohio Historical Center is located at I-71 and East 17th Avenue in Columbus. It is one of 60 sites operated by the Ohio Historical Society, a nonprofit organization that serves as the state’s partner in preserving and interpreting Ohio’s history, archaeology and natural history.
