Next Verandah Concert highlights traditional folk music
(FREMONT, Ohio, July 2, 2008) – Folk music makes a comeback at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center’s next Verandah Concert 6:45-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 9 on the grounds of estate of 19th U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes. Sponsorship from Fremont Federal Credit Union makes possible a performance by The Unexpected Party. Admission to the concert and an ice cream social that precedes the event is free.
The seven musicians that comprise The Unexpected Party are friends from the Cleveland area. They were brought together by their shared interest in music. What started as informal gatherings in the home of Greg and Joanne Meyer developed into a performance group that plays 20-25 gigs a year.
Traditional folk songs are the group's mainstay. The repertoire dates to early-American times with a selection of melodies of the British Isles, Civil War, and not-so-traditional folk tunes mixed in for variety. The Unexpected Party achieves its unique sound through a blending of vintage instruments. Performances feature hammered dulcimers, autoharp, button box, bowed psaltery, bodhran, Celtic harp, concertina, claw-hammer banjo, flute, harmonica, jaw harp, and penny whistle. Musicians add a bit of whimsy by coaxing music from a washboard, rainstick, and eggs.
Members of The Unexpected Party have made two recordings with a third due out soon.
Those planning to attend the Verandah Concert should bring their own chairs or blankets and can choose a favorite spot on the expansive and shady lawn in front of the Hayes Home. Bug spray and sunscreen also are recommended. In the event of thunderstorms, the concert will be canceled.
