Quilt artist discusses Using Wool in Quilts at the Hayes Museum

(FREMONT, Ohio, June 23, 2008) – The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, in conjunction with its NEW exhibit Patterns from the Past: Quilts of Northern Ohio, presents a lecture by Ohio quilt artist Allison Gollehon. The free event takes place 2-3 p.m. Sunday, June 29 in the Hayes Museum auditorium.

Gollehon is owner of the Black Swamp Quilt Shoppe in Millbury. A gifted quilt artisan, she favors using wool in her quilt creations. Her shop specializes in quilting-wool and she shares with the audience ideas for quilt projects that make use of wool. Gollehon also displays a selection of wool fabrics perfect for quilting.

The lecture is the first in a series of four that highlights quilting. All lectures take place Sunday afternoon and are free of charge. Those attending can take advantage of their visit to the Hayes Presidential Center to view Patterns from the Past: Quilts of Northern Ohio. The exhibit showcases 30 quilts made in the 19th century by Northern Ohio women. Quilts are displayed in the Hayes Museum and Hayes Home. A combination ticket priced at $10.50/adults, $9.50/senior citizens and $4/children ages 6-12 gains entry to view all of the quilts. Sunday hours for the Museum and Hayes Home are noon-5 p.m. Tours of the home are guide led and last 45 minutes. Museum tours are self-guided. Please allow a minimum of an hour to tour the Museum.

Other quilt lectures scheduled include:

August 3 - Amy Reitzel of the Sunflower Quilt shop in Sylvania speaks on A Modern Twist on Old Quilt Blocks. A selection of Reitzel’s quilts recently was the focus of an exhibit at Schedel Gardens and Arboretum in Elmore.

Sept. 14 - Joseph Sarah, an expert on quilts, discusses Uncovering Your Quilt’s History. He invites those attending to bring their own vintage quilts to share to and learn about their origins, patterns, fabrics, ages, stitching, history, and value.

Oct. 26 - Gretchen Schultz of the Quilt Foundry in Maumee shares her knowledge of Antique Sewing Tools. Schultz displays a selection of items from her collection, components of which are included the Patterns from the Past exhibit.

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center is located at the corner of Hayes and Buckland avenues, Fremont, Ohio. The facility is affiliated with the Ohio Historical Society. Check the Hayes Presidential Center website www.rbhayes.org for a complete list of year-round special events.
