Ohio Students Bring Home National History Day Honors
Eight projects ranked among top 15 nationally
The Ohio delegation to the National History Day program at the University of Maryland in College Park returned home with eight awards among the top 15 in the country, including one of only two awards given nationally for overall excellence from The History Channel. Students from Cleveland, Cincinnati and Gallia County were among the award winners.
The middle- and high-school students competed with more than 2,000 students from the United States and American Samoa for honors they earned through district and statewide competitions, according to Megan Wood, state coordinator for the Ohio History Day Program in Ohio. Emily Cosco, a student at Mercy Montessori Center in Cincinnati, was awarded a second place medal for her individual performance. Second-place honors were also awarded to Henna Tzeng and Eileen Johnson from Birchwood School in Cleveland for their group performance. Andrew Walker, a student at Gallia Academy in Gallipolis, returned to Ohio with a third place medal and an award for overall excellence from The History Channel for his senior paper. Daniel Strassfield, Alex Grossman-McKee, Juliet Kibbe and Patrick White from Shaker Heights High School received a third place award for their group documentary.
NOTE: A complete listing follows of awards received by the Ohio delegation.
History Day is an exciting co-curricular program that encourages young people to explore a historical subject related to an annual theme. Students develop, research and present projects in junior (grades 6-8) and senior (grades 9-12) divisions in categories of exhibits, documentaries, dramatic performances and historical papers. Historians, educators and professionals in related fields evaluate students’ work at district, state and national events. Award-winning entries at the district level proceed to the statewide event and top statewide winners are eligible to represent Ohio at the national event.. This year’s theme was Triumph and Tragedy in History.
“Students make history come alive and demonstrates that students learn history when they do history,” said Megan Wood, state coordinator for National History Day in Ohio.
National History Day was founded in 1974 in Cleveland at Case Western Reserve University. The program went national in 1980. National History Day in Ohio is sponsored by the Ohio Historical Society and is funded in part by contributions by Honda of America Mfg., Inc., Cargill and AEP Ohio.
