"ON WINNING THE PRIZE" FEATURES PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING PHOTOGRAPHERS JUNE 26
Ohio Historical Society to Install 2008 Photographs to Featured Exhibition

(COLUMBUS, Ohio, June 13, 2008) – Only two photographs of the millions published in American newspapers each year are selected to receive the prestigious Pulitzer Prize. What does it take to win the coveted award?

Join the Ohio Historical Society June 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. to find out as it hosts two Pulitzer Prize-winning photographers, both past and present, as they discuss their experience for “On Winning the Prize,” a Community Conversations series event at the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus. The installation of the recently announced 2008 Pulitzer Prize photographs in the Capture the Moment: The Pulitzer Prize Photographs exhibition and a tour through the gallery will follow.

Photographers Preston Gannaway of the award-winning Rocky Mountain News in Denver, Colo., and Professor Marcy Nighswander of Ohio University will provide fascinating insights into what it means to capture the prize. Preston Gannaway was a photojournalist for the Concord Monitor in New Hampshire when she won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography for her intimate chronicle of a family coping with a parent's terminal illness. Marcy Nighswander, who has been teaching photojournalism at Ohio University since 1995, was one of a group of Associated Press photographers that won in 1993 for Feature Photography for their coverage of the 1992 presidential campaign.

"We're excited to have these exceptional photojournalists share their unique perspectives about the Pulitzer process, the story behind their photos and on winning the ultimate prize for photography," said Connie Bodner, director of Museums at the Ohio Historical Society. "This also will be a great opportunity to see our featured exhibit, Capture the Moment, with the addition of the 2008 winning images for Feature Photography and Breaking News Photography."

Capture the Moment: The Pulitzer Prize Photographs is largest and most comprehensive collection of Pulitzer Prize-winning photos. These powerful images have not only captured the defining moments of history, but have changed lives and the way we think. There are the iconic pictures of the World Trade Center attack, the flag raising at Iwo Jima and Kent State as well as tender moments like Babe Ruth's last day as a Yankee. Following the installation, this special exhibition will feature 152 award-winning images from 1942, when the Pulitzer Prize for photojournalism was established, through 2008.

The appearance of Preston Gannaway was made possible through support of the Newseum and the Rocky Mountain News. Capture the Moment, which is sponsored locally by the Reinberger Foundation, the Estate of Michael D. Lehman and The Columbus Dispatch, runs through July 25. Admission to the Ohio Historical Center is $8/adults, $4/students and free for OHS members and children 5 years of age and under.

The Ohio Historical Center is located at I-71 and East 17th Avenue in Columbus. During the 17th Avenue Bridge construction project, visitors should call or check online for detour directions.
