Area Students Receive Honors At State History Day Competition
COLUMBUS, OHIO – Nine students from District 6, consisting of Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, Knox, Licking, Madison, Perry, Pickaway, and Union counties, earned honors at the National History Day in Ohio April 24 at The Ohio State University’s Ohio Union. Overall, 590 students participated in this state-level competition. Middle and high school students receiving honors at the state event included the following:
Junior Paper Honorable Mention: Joe Thompson from St. Michael Elementary School in Worthington (43085) for Silk Maps in World War II
Junior Group Documentary Honorable Mention: Bobby Daniel, Patrick Palumbo and David Wing for St. Michael Elementary School in Worthington (43085) for The Transcontinental Railroad
Junior Group Exhibit Honorable Mention: Meredith Smith and Gabriella Marino from St. Michael Elementary School in Worthington (43085) for Indianola Junior High School
Junior Group Performance Honorable Mention: Shelby Furer, Sami Dinsmoor, Courtney Welsh and Katelyn Pacha from North Union Middle School in Richwood (43344) for Susan B. Anthony's Fight for Freedom
Junior Individual Exhibit Honorable Mention: Alex Keller from St. Agatha School in Columbus (43221) for Cycling Through The Centuries: The History of the Bicycle
Senior Group Documentary Honorable Mention: Gabrielle Robinson, Alissa Jones, Sierra Vaughn and Alejandro Roa from Natural Learning Montessori Academy in Shawnee Hills (43065) for The Pill: Morality and a Woman's Right to Choose
Senior Group Exhibit Honorable Mention: Heidi Sanderson, Ashley Casto, Adrianna Hersom and Brittney Hirst from West Jefferson High School in West Jefferson (43162) for Sigmund Freud
Senior Individual Documentary Honorable Mention: Perry Staffan from Staffan Homeschool in Carroll (43112) for But a Gentleman's Hands are Clean! Innovation Ignored
Junior Paper National Alternate: Marissa Wierzbicki from St. Michael Elementary School in Worthington (43085) for The Polio Vaccine: Freedom from Fear
State finalists are eligible to compete at National History Day, June 13-17, University of Maryland. State alternates will attend the national event if either of the finalists is unable to go. This year, Ohio is represented by 48 students participating in 32 projects, two in each of the 16 junior and senior categories.
“History Day involves so many people working together – students, teachers, parents, community members who serve as judges,” said Burt Logan, executive director and CEO of the Ohio Historical Society. “The year’s entries were exceptional and everyone who participated should be proud of the work they have done.”
Participants could also compete for special awards. Joe Thompson of St. Michael Elementary School in Worthington (43085) received the OEA Cradle of Invention Award.
