Area Stidents Receive Honors At State History Day Competition
Finalist to Participate in National Event in June
COLUMBUS, OHIO – Four students from District 4, consisting of Ashtabula, Geauga, Mahoning, Portage and Trumbull counties, earned honors at the National History Day in Ohio April 24 at The Ohio State University’s Ohio Union. Overall, 590 students participated in this state-level competition. Middle and high school students receiving honors at the state event included the following:
Junior Individual Exhibit Honorable Mention: Max Morrow from Boardman Center Middle School in Youngstown for Embalming: Preserving the Dead
Senior Individual Exhibit Honorable Mention: Emily Schueller from Boardman High School in Boardman for FDR's New Deal: Reinventing National Government
Junior Group Exhibit National Alternate: Tara Childs and Kaylee Kinkela from Holy Family School in Poland for Thomas Edison
Junior Group Exhibit National Finalist: Sarah Mamula and Kelsey Nelson from Harding Middle School in Steubenville for The Evolution of Radio: Impact of Sound
State finalists are eligible to compete at National History Day, June 13-17, University of Maryland. State alternates will attend the national event if either of the finalists is unable to go This year, Ohio is represented by 48 students participating in 32 projects, two in each of the 16 junior and senior categories.
“History Day involves so many people working together – students, teachers, parents, community members who serve as judges,” said Burt Logan, executive director and CEO of the Ohio Historical Society. “The year’s entries were exceptional and everyone who participated should be proud of the work they have done.”
National History Day in Ohio is co-sponsored by the Ohio Historical Society and funded in part by contributions from Honda of America Mfg. Inc, Huntington Bank, Cargill and the Harry C. Moores Foundation.
